Solanum lycopersicum, images of cultivars (ovaries and fruit), grouped by shape and size.

fruit overview Whereas common tomato features a round and red fruit, many varieties exhibit different fruit morphologies and vary greatly in shape, size and color. Information about these diverse varieties such as fruit pictures, origin of the variety, and the genes that control shape can be found at this link.

Solanum pimpinellifolium accession LA1589, images of flower and fruit formation.

development overview Overview of tomato fruit development (A) and flower development (B) of LA1589, respectively. Inflorescences were tagged prior to anthesis of the first flower. The time of anthesis of each flower per inflorescence was recorded. To ensure proper seed and fruit set, each newly opened flower was self-pollinated. For most flowers on a given inflorescence, successive flower opening occurred at 24-hour intervals. Two days after pollination, flowers had senesced and fruit development was initiated. Flowers opened at 24-hour intervals, further indicating that floral meristem initiation occurs every 24 hours. Therefore, the difference in development of consecutive maturing fruit and flower buds on one inflorescence is approximately one day.
